Baby Blues

Does your child have baby blue or light colored eyes? According to a recent blog post in the Washingtonian, light colored eyes (blues, green and greys) are more vulnerable to the sun than dark colored eyes.

Why? It's because light colored eyes have less pigment in each iris to help absorb harmful UV rays. More pigment means darker eyes, and more protection against UV light. It's no surprise, then, that UV damage to children with lighter eyes can occur at a faster a more severe rate.

In addition, according to CBS, whether your child has light or dark eyes, children’s eyes are way more susceptible to the sun than adults' eyes, because their pupils are larger. Larger pupils allow more light to enter their eyes. And on top of that, a child’s cornea, lens, and fluids also contain less UV-blocking pigment, allowing more light to reach the retina.

This summer, to avoid singing those baby blues, have your children wear Babiators every time they go outside!
